Fishing Charters

So you have decided a fishing charter might be fun.....but not sure what to expect? Or what will happen? Lets demistify the fishing charter, and i'll help provide you with some tips on how you can get the most out of your fishing trip.

I used to crew on a fishing charter boat, and had a great time taking people out fishing and enjoying the outdoors and ocean. Having been on heaps of fishing charters myself, im also really excited to present my hot tips for making your fishing charter the best it can be.

First things first, always establish with the charter operator a few of these key things:

*What time and where the vessel leaves. You'll want to know where exactly to be picked up at the wharf or marina.

*What gear you are required to bring. The boat should provide safety gear. You might have to provide lunch, sunblock, towels and drinks for your party.

*What the travel time is versus the fishing time, for the duration of the trip. Many charters are nothing more than a scenic cruise!

*What the fishing has been like lately, and what species you can expect to catch. If you wish to target a certain species, let the skipper know. You are the boss!

*What the conditions will be like, and what clothing is appropriate. Never go to sea underdressed! 

*Always ask who gets the catch. Sometimes, the skipper will keep some fish 'for the boat'. Make sure this is sorted before going fishing. Also, ask if they will fillet the catch, and if not, where this can be done.

*If you havnt been on the vessel before, ask the skipper what the gear is like, and what local knowledge he has of the fishing grounds. You dont want to be paying some bandit skipper to tour round and gain knowledge at your expense! Ensure the gear is well maintained and upto standard for the fishing your doing.
